Garnet-red with ruby highlights that take on a slightly orange tone over time, it has a clear-cut, intense nose with overtones of vanilla, spices, withered roses and underbrush; its taste is dry, but soft, full-bodied, velvety and well-balanced, and is very long-lasting.
"Raspberry, mineral and licorice aromas follow through to a full body, with velvety tannins and a fruity finish. Balanced and friendly. Best after 2010. 10,000 cases made."
"The 2005 Barolo Serralunga is a relatively forward Barolo with an attractive bouquet of tar, spices, licorice and leather. The wine reveals excellent concentration, depth and fine overall balance. This is a strong effort from Fontanafredda. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2020.
These 2005s are the finest Barolos I can recall tasting here. The estate seems to have toned down the super-ripe style of recent years and the results are striking. As I have written here before, Fontanafredda owns some of the most prized vineyards in all of Piedmont, and clearly has potential for making important wines of the highest level."
