Alcohol By Volume: 20.0%

Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

This luxuriant, firmly structured wine is marked by intense black fruit and cassis flavors and aromas with nuances of spice, nutmeg and sweet herbs set in a plummy, saturated texture ending in a lush finish.

Critical Acclaim

"Deeply colored, with intense freshness and juiciness to the blackberry, dark plum and raspberry tart flavors that extend with hints of cedar on the finish. Drink now through 2022."
92 Points

"A well-balanced wine, bringing both rich fruit and sweet tannins to go with dense concentration. There is ripeness from black jam and sweet jelly, followed by a good core of dryness."
92 Points

While WS rated Fonseca Late Bottled Vintage 2005 a 92 I would give it an 88. Still a nice port and worth the $22.99.

Rating:

This wine is not what it is supposed to be - originally, this wine was advertised as the LBV 2005 with a 92 wine spectator rating. I ordered it and received the unfiltered LBV 2005, which got an 86 wine spectator rating. Since then, Wine.Com had changed the picture of the label to reflect the unfiltered, but has not changed the WS rating to reflect the true rating. Buyer beware!

Learn About Portugal

Portugal The country best known for Port, Madeira and corks is often overlooked when consumers think of red and white still wines - but take note! The table wines of the region have improved dramatically in the past few decades. The winemaking areas trickle down the country's narrow shape, bordered by the Atlantic on the west and Spain on the east. Notable...

Learn About Port

Port Wine Port is a fortified wine that is made by adding brandy during fermentation. The addition of spirits kills the yeasts, which in turn halts the fermentation process. This results in a wine both sweet and high in alcohol. Named for its home city Oporto, true Port must come from the designated area. The grapes used are a blend,, but the favored grape thought to...
