The Wine Advocate - "The 2007 Feather Cabernet Sauvignon (100%) is produced by Randy Dunn. It is a multi-regional blend of Cabernet with the Dionysus and Weinbau Vineyards as the principal sources. It was aged for 22 months in 90% new French oak. Deep purple-colored, it exhibits a classy bouquet of pain grille, pencil lead, earth notes, violets, and black currant. Supple and layered on the palate, it displays enough underlying structure to evolve for 5-6 years. With outstanding volume and grip, it will offer a drinking window extending from 2015 to 2027."
Wine Enthusiast - "Pure Cabernet, aged in the same Vicard barrels as winemaker Randy Dunn’s Howell Mountain wines. About 90% is new oak, but it doesn’t strangle the fruit in any way. Tart and vibrant, with black cherry/black currant fruit, this balanced effort shows a velvety character and a fine touch in the vineyard. Nuances of coffee, earth, leaf and dried herb are threaded through, in perfect harmony and balanced for medium-term aging."
Wine Spectator - "Firm, chewy and distinctive for its smoky dried tomato accents around a core of blackberry, black cherry and bay leaf flavors, lingering expressively on the deftly balanced finish. Best from 2012 through 2017. 1,991 cases made."
International Wine Cellar - "ripe and silky, especially for a wine made under the direction of Randy Dunn, but showing little in the way of easy sweetness. Strong currant and black cherry fruit are given grip by substantial tannins, which arrive late. Ultimately powerful and backward but not hard. This includes a lot of Weinbau vineyard fruit, which supplies structure.

Feather winemaker and longtime Napa Valley vintner, Randy Dunn, has built a reputation over four decades for producing world-class Cabernet Sauvignons. After making wines at Caymus from 1975-1985, Randy established Dunn Vineyards on Howell Mountain where he continues to craft distinctive wines of high acclaim. Now partnering with Allen Shoup, Randy brings his artistry and expertise to Washington State's Columbia Valley to produce small quantities of Cabernet Sauvignon from the region's finest vineyards. Feather is one of six distinct red wines from the Long Shadows Vintners collection.
Concentrated and beautifully balanced, Feather might best be described as "an iron fist in a velvet glove." This incredibly complex wine offers an array of fresh berry aromas, complimented by spicy, dark cherry and dried currant flavors that persist on the palate.
Randy checks his favorite vineyards for balance throughout the growing season and returns during harvest to inspect the grapes before making the call to pick. This 100 percent Cabernet Sauvignon is hand-harvested, fermented in small lots and aged for an average of 22 months in new Vicard French oak barrels (Randy’s cooper of choice at Dunn Vineyards as well). Columbia Valley is the largest of Washington State's wine growing regions, with almost 11 million acres. It encompasses a number of smaller regions, including Yakima Valley, Walla Walla Valley, Red Mountain and more. The vast area consists of a range of climates, allowing viticulturists to plant a diverse selection of grape varieties. Most wineries plant rows sparsely, which helps the vines survive the harsh winters.
Notable FactsMerlot is the most popular and most planted grape of the area, followed by Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. Syrah and Riesling are also popular and continue to grow in acreage.

So how does a state known for rain and coffee produce high quality wines? They plant their grapes on the east side of the Cascade mountains, away from that ever-present rain cloud that sits along the coast. Perhaps wine grapes do well since the sandy loam soils east of the Cascade range give way to an almost desert-like land, saved from drought only by the helpful rivers that run through the area – and the good irrigation systems.
Thinking that the state would do best with typical northern growing grapes like Riesling and Gewurtztraminer, turns out the apple state is well-suited for reds, namely Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and, more recently, Syrah. Of course, whites have not been forgotten - Washington State Rieslings range from bone-dry to sweet, are well-structured and high quality, and Chardonnay dominates most of the other white plantings, making a range of wines. But the reds of the region, Merlot in particular, have made Washington State a quality force to be reckoned with.

Alcohol By Volume GuideMost wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume.
