Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

Fairview was the first in South Africa to plant and bottle Viognier and have now been producing this wine for over 10 years. With gentle oaking and careful site selection, our winemakers look to emphasize the complex fruit flavors and fragrance that characterise Viognier.

Critical Acclaim

"I prefer the 2010 Viognier that has a very composed nose: nectarine, white peach and a hint of oyster shell in the background. The palate is well balanced with a light peach and nectarine entry, underneath which lies attractive grass clipping and lemongrass notes. With great length and precision, this is an impressive Viognier."

"A bright, crunchy style, displaying green apple, fig and green melon fruit flavors, with a fresh, unadorned finish. Drink now. 2,500 cases made"

Winemaking on the farm can be traced back to 1699, not quite a half-century after the first European settlers arrived in southern Africa. But...

Learn About South Africa

South Africa A long history of growing grapes and making wine, but less of a history on exporting it, and even lesser on the quality aspect. At the turn of the century (1900, that is), a surplus of wine in South Africa created a hierarchy of cooperatives, the biggest and best known being KWV. This organization seemed to favor quantity over quality and had most...

Learn About Viognier

Viognier(vee-ohn-YAY) Viognier is best known for producing the rich, aromatic white wines of the Northern Rhone. Once a pricey commodity of the area, it's now much easier to find and drink. The perfumed grape creates wines of distinct aromas and flavors. Lower in acid and even lower yielding, Viognier kept to itself in Southern France until some traveling winemakers took hold of...
