Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

Ideal weather and low yields produced highly extracted and wellstructured Cabernet Sauvignon in 2006. The crop yields and vine growth were kept in good balance and the ripening season provided ample flavor and tannin development. The cool weather during harvest allowed us to make more precise harvest timing decisions as the vines ripened the fruit at a slow and deliberate pace. The resulting wines have good concentration and tannin integrity, and a sense of balanced ripeness.

This opulent Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon opens with generous aromas of blueberry, blackberry and cassis that lead to layers of black licorice and mocha. The wine has the signature style of Etude with depth and richness of fruit and a velvety texture. There's a wonderful saturation and expansiveness on the palate with flavors of black cherry, black tea, clove and vanilla bean notes from aging in French oak. The tannins are youthful and plush, which will allow this wine to age gracefully.

Learn About Etude Map ItMap It

The underlying philosophy at Etude Wines is that winemaking begins in the vineyard, long before the grapes are harvested. Winemaker, Jon Priest, believes that superior grape growing diminishes the need for intervention by the winemaker and results in a wine that is grown, not made. Etude specializes in two classic red varieties: Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon. Though modeled on the best from Burgundy to Bordeaux, these wines speak clearly of their contemporary California origins, combining rich, ripe fruit with an elegant and opulent mouth feel.

Learn About Napa Valley

It's hard not to think of Napa Valley when thinking of California wines. The region is, after all, the one that brought world recognition to California wine making. The area was settled by a few choice wine families in the 1960's who bet that the wines of the area would grow and flourish. They were right. The Napa wine industry really took off in the 1980's, when vineyard...

Learn About Cabernet Sauvignon

(cab-uhr-NAY sow-veeh-yawn) King of Red Many refer to Cabernet Sauvignon as the king of red grapes. Perhaps that title is due to its ability to grow worldwide in a number of climates, or to the fact that it produces wine with such character yet such diversity. Either way, this grape is responsible, as a whole or a partner, for some of the greatest wines in the world. In Bordeaux,...
