The name Escudo Rojo is derived from the translation of Rothschild (the winery's owner), which means red shield. True to its Bordeaux roots the wine is made from a blend of cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc and carmenere, a Bordeaux varietal that has been adopted by Chile and shows great promise. The wine shows plenty of class with clean, bright, fresh, fruit flavors and smells. Though it teems with fruit it is quite dry, very complex and shows a pleasant grip of tannins, which contributes to its great texture.
Long and thin, Chile has a lot of land north to south. The wine region here is a series of districts based near Santiago. The vineyards are protected by the Pacific on the west and the Andes mountains on the east.
