Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

Bright ruby-red in color, with an expressive nose that shows sweet spices such as cloves, cinnamon, and nutmeg that come from the oak barrels and heighten the wine's fresh fruit profile, while light meaty and balsamic touches lend complexity. The smooth palate has fine tannins that create a firm but friendly attack and flavors that confirm the aromatic profile, dominated by the sweet spices and red and black fruits. An excellent acidity promises a long life ahead in the bottle.

Critical Acclaim

"A deep, dark Syrah with cola, spice, pepper, cedar and olive notes to go with more familiar blackberry and mocha. The palate is deep and pure, with juicy acidity pushing herbal berry and layered spice flavors. Has good flow and feel, and overall it strikes the right chords."

Learn About Chile

(CHEE-lay) Long and thin, Chile has a lot of land north to south. The wine region here is a series of districts based near Santiago. The home base of Syrah is the Northern Rhone, where it creates the exclusive wines of Hermitage and Cote Rotie. On the less pricy side, the Rhone makes Syrah-based wines in Crozes...
