Eppalock Ridge Heathcote Shiraz 2005
Syrah/Shiraz from Australia
The 2005 Shiraz is inky blue and purple in colour. The nose is densely packed with marachino cherries, leather, licorice and briary aromas. The full bodied palate is generous with plenty of sweet, ripe fruits, drying tannins and fine cleansing acidity to keep the palate fresh and has well integrated French oak.
Wine Enthusiast - "Despite carrying a lot of alcohol (16% on the label), this powerful mix of mocha, caramel and stewed berries does a good job of hiding it. At first, it seems soft and creamy in texture, but it turns firmer, chewier and more serious on the finish, adding in a hint of espresso. Opt for drinking this over the near term with grilled beef."

Eppalock Ridge Winery
Eppalock Ridge is a small family owned winery producing remarkable wines in Central Victoria's most promising Shiraz region, Heathcote. It has been suggested that this region is the best place in Australia for full-bodied reds, in particular Shiraz.
Eppalock Ridge Winery is located in the heart of the Goldmining district in Central Victoria. In 1976 Sue and Rod Hourigan left behind careers in fabric design and television production design at the ABC, to chase their passion for producing fine wine.
The chase led them to McLaren Vale South Australia where Sue found work in the Barn Restaurant. Rod started his apprenticeship at D'Arenburg Winery and over the next 3 years did vintages at Pirramimma and Coriole, gaining invaluable hands on experience. During this time he attended the first short course for winemakers, at what is now called Charles Sturt University, conducted by Brian Croser of Petaluma fame.
In 1979 they moved to Redesdale in the Heathcote district of Central Victoria where they established Eppalock Ridge. The winery and vineyards are perched on a rocky, basalt ridge overlooking Lake Eppalock. The vineyards were planted to Shiraz, Cabernet, Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. With a landmass the size of the US, Australia has just as many appellations. Many wines are simply labeled from their state of origin. Some of these are the most popular:
New South Wales- home to Sydney and other tourist destinations, New South Wales has a smaller focused wine growing region, but many wines are a blend of these smaller appellations and so are deemed New South Wales appellation.
Western Australia– a small corner of Australia winemaking occurs on the opposite coast of the others. The largest state, Western Australia includes the smaller appellation of Margaret River.
Southeastern Australia– This appellation encompasses the states of South Australia, New South Wales and Victoria. Grapes are often trucked in from at least 2 of these states for crushing and bottling, giving the wine a more general appellation of origin. This is the broadest appellation in the country.

The state of South Australia, which produces about 60% of the country's wine, also has the most wineries and sub-regions, including McLaren Vale, Clare Valley, Coonawarra and Barossa Valley. A nice wine and a great value.
Alcohol By Volume GuideMost wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.
