Edmeades Mendocino Zinfandel 2005
Zinfandel
from North Coast, California
winemaker's notes:
86% Zinfandel, 12% Petite Sirah, 2% Grenache
"Focused aromas of cherries, spice, roasted coffee, and oak vanillin lead way to more funky aromas of earth and minerals. The Grenache adds a perfumed, spicy fruitiness to the aromas. The Petite Sirah fills in the middle palate with meaty, darker fruit flavors. Another vintage with a higher percentage of Zinfandel in the blend shows bright upfront fruitiness on the palate with a long, lingering berry finish. There is greater structure and acidity than our previous vintages with the chalky tannins from Redwood Valley fruit peaking through the finish. The fruit is packed tight and juicy, adding zest to the firm structured finish. The 2005 has excellent cellaring potential and will be soft, supple and smooth in five to ten years."

I have 1 2001, 2 2002, 7 2004 and 42 2005 and 6 2004 late harvest in my "cellar". It becomes more and more difficult to let this wine sit and age. The 2005 is drinkable now but in 3-5 years it will be perfect. 2001 is my current favorite vintage but I think it is because it has aged to perfection.

Very, very nice zin for the price. Not huge and alcohol like many of today's fruit bombs, but a wonderful combination of juicy, forward fruit, soft oak, and some racy tannins balanced well by soft oak. For about $15-16 street, this would be a nice pick-up on the way to just about any dinner party featuring hearty dishes.

I had this wine on the suggestion of our waiter at the Redstone restaurant in Marlton, NJ and it was awesome with my prime rib. I came back to the restaurant the next night just for this wine since I can't find it in any liquor store in the area. I am hooked. I usually drink Merlot or shirazz but this is so much better. An added bonus is that I am allergic to mold and usually get a headache from red wine. With this wine-no headache. Whatever this vinyard is doing, they are doing it right.
