Dr. Loosen Urziger Wurzgarten Spatlese 2004
Riesling
from Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, Germany
winemaker's notes:
The red sandstone and slate soil of Urziger Wurzgarten make it unique on the Mosel. Although immediately upstream from the top vineyards of Erden, it produces a completely different kind of great wine, with exotically spicy aromas and a mesmerizing earthiness.
"...A portion of it comes from ungrafted vines more than 100 years old, which may account for the tremendous concentration and depth of flavor - it even strays into red frut territory..."

This is just so good! Deep and fruity, complex, just a different character from the usual Spätlese. It's like the difference between regular (good quality) black tea and a first flush Darjeeling. Each sip brings new tastes and hints. This was a gift, and I'm very grateful to the giver!
