Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

Dow's Ruby offers a great entry level Port for the shopper looking for value. It's bright raspberry and cherry flavors marry well with cocoa power and mineral notes with the drier finish characteristic of Dow's Ports.

Serving and pairing suggestions
Dow's Ruby is bottled ready to drink after an average three years of cask aging. It has a t-cap closure, which means that you don't need a corkscrew to open it and that it will stay fresh for four to six months if stored in a cool, dark place or refrigerator. Serve it in a glass with at least a six ounce capacity so that you may appreciate the wine's aromas. Dow's Ruby is delicious with creamy blue cheeses or dark chocolate.

I love to have a glass of port for dessert, and I really like this one. 19% alcohol (most wines are around 13.5 to 14%), so it only takes one glass to give you that warm and fuzzy feeling :) Good price, too.

It was snowing so I didn't want to go to the store for wine for my stew. Yes, stew! We decided to try the port. Lo and behold, I loved the flavor and my meal came out absolutely delicious. I would use it again to drink and to cook. My son, a bartender, did of course tell me not to use it but only after I had. As Bob Ross, used to say, happy mistakes!

Learn About Dow's

Dow's has been producing top Ports for over two centuries. One of the first companies to establish its own vineyards, Dow's acquired Senhora da Ribeira, located in the remote Upper Douro, in 1890 and Bomfim, which lies in the heart of Alto Douro, in 1896. Their respective wines, Ribeira with its soft fruit and violet aromas, and Bomfim with its concentrated intensity, provide the backbone to the recognized drier style of Dow's Ports. In 1912, Andrew James Symington became a partner in Dow's and today, five members of the fourth generation Symington family own and manage this historic house.

Learn About Port

Port Wine Port is a fortified wine that is made by adding brandy during fermentation. The addition of spirits kills the yeasts, which in turn halts the fermentation process. This results in a wine both sweet and high in alcohol. Named for its home city Oporto, true Port must come from the designated area. The grapes used are a blend,, but the favored grape thought to...
