Winemaker's Notes

An extremely characteristic Mencia with all the complexity and elegance this can entail. Impressive red cherry color with a veil of violet shades on the rim. Powerful nose of red fruit (raspberry and cherry) and an assertive ripe plum along with floral notes, such as roses and violets, mixed with fallen leaves, tobacco and sandalwood fragrances. Very well structured, impeccable balance with a glyceric texture, full bodied, plush and elegant. Rich and very long finish with excellent persistence together with an excellent acidity, black fruit and balsamic fragrances. Lingering aftertaste of toasted notes (cocoa) and mint together with ripe plum and exotic spices.

Critical Acclaim

"This dense wine from Bierzo is rich, chocolaty and reticent in its delivery of black-fruit aromas. The round, pure palate is rich and easy to like, while flavors of baked berry, earth and chocolate lead to a chewy, round finish that's friendly but structured and substantive. "
92 Points

"Opaque ruby. Intense, mineral-accented aromas of candied red berries, cherry and cola, along with floral and Asian spice nuances. Sweet and penetrating, offering deep black raspberry and bitter cherry flavors and a hint of candied licorice. Sappy and focused on the finish, which features notes of vanilla and cherry pit."

Learn About Dominio de Tares

Dominio de Tares was formed in 2000 by an enthusiastic group of local investors, leading a quality resurgence following years of neglect in the area. Given Bierzo’s ideal, fresh/mineral terroir and the old Mencía vines, quality at the highest level was an immediate possibility. Amancio Fernández, Bierzo native and one of Spain’s brightest young enologists, brought intimate knowledge of local viticulture to bear, working from the start with the area’s most serious growers in order to obtain the very best fruit.
