Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

The Cotes du Rhone Villages Massif d'Uchaux Cuvee Genest is made from 50% Grenache and 50% Syrah. It undergoes a longer cuvaison, 18 months of aging in tank, and is bottled without filtration. This rich and deeply concentrated wine goes best with robust foods and ripe cheeses.

Ripe and forward, with the vintage's juicy core of plum, blackberry and black currant fruit backed by tobacco and briar notes that keep the finish lively. Rock-solid. Drink now through 2011. 200 cases imported.

In 1988, Isabelle and Arnaud Guicharde acquired this estate in the hamlet of Derboux, near Mondragon. The young couple, passionate for a career as wine producers, sought to make the finest Cotes du Rhone possible. Vines were first planted here in 1960 but the Guichardes reorganized the 15 hectare vineyard to take better advantage of the soils and exposition. The estate sits on a high plateau at the top of the Massif d'Uchaux making it ideallly situated for the ripening of grapes. The vineyards, Sixty percent Grenache and forty percent Syrah are planted on sloping, sandy-limestone soil. About one hectare of Grenache Blanc and Gris is used for the Cotes du Rhone Blanc.

With bold fruit flavors and accents of sweet spice, Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre form the base of the classic Rhône Red Blend, while Carignan, Cinsault and Counoise often come in to play. Though they originated from France’s southern Rhône Valley, with some creative interpretation, Rhône blends have also become popular in other countries. Somm Secret—Putting their own local spin on the Rhône Red Blend, those from Priorat often include Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. In California, it is not uncommon to see Petite Sirah make an appearance.

Typically thought of as a baby Chateâuneuf-du-Pape, the term Côtes du Rhône actually doesn’t merely apply to the flatter outskirts of the major southern Rhône appellations, it also includes the fringes of well-respected northern Rhône appellations. White wines can be produced under the appellation name, but very little is actually made.

The region offers some of the best values in France and even some first-rate and age-worthy reds. Red wine varieties include most of the Chateâuneuf-du-Pape varieties like Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre, Cinsault, and Counoise, as well as Carignan. White grapes grown include Grenache blanc, Roussanne and Viognier, among others.
