Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

The Pouilly Fumé wine is made exclusively from the "Sauvignon" grape. This "cru" has the typical "gun flint" flavor which goes remarkably well with seafood, fish with white butter sauce, and goat cheese. On the nose, floral aromas with pepper, and citrus fruits. On the palate, complex while being fruity, fresh and mineral at once.

Grown at a vineyard just outside the town of Pouilly-sur-Loire, this has satisfying depth that feels very Pouilly-Fume. Its fresh kumquat flavor and bright scent, like the spritz off orange zest, give it a lively and mouthwatering feel. Smoky, flinty and discreet in its power, this will age with grace.

Herve Seguin's vineyards cover 10 hectares in three villages of Pouilly-Fume. His vineyards average 30 years of age and are planted in limestone soils, where Sauvignon Blanc performs best. All the fruit goes through a severe selection in the vineyard and is hand harvested to insure the grapes arrive at the winery unblemished. This wine has extraordinary aromatics of smoky, flinty grapefruit with intense Sauvignon flavors. Seguin never pumps or filters prior to bottling.

Capable of a vast array of styles, Sauvignon Blanc is a crisp, refreshing variety that equally reflects both terroir and varietal character. Though it can vary depending on where it is grown, a couple of commonalities always exist—namely, zesty acidity and intense aromatics. This variety is of French provenance. Somm Secret—Along with Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc is a proud parent of Cabernet Sauvignon. That green bell pepper aroma that all three varieties share is no coincidence—it comes from a high concentration of pyrazines (herbaceous aromatic compounds) inherent to each member of the family.

Famous in the Loire and throughout the world for perfumed Sauvignon blanc, Pouilly-Fume sits due east, across the Loire River from Sancerre. Limestone soils with clay and flint (also called silex) contribute to the wines' freshness and often times smoky, flinty, mineral character.
