Located in the village of Verdigny northwest of the town of Sancerre, in the heart of the upper Loire Valley. 130 acres of hilltop vineyards with deep limestone soil. The founding Archambault family arrived in the region in the 15th century, turning an abandoned cave-like quarry into a winery. The Cave de la Perrière provided an excellent venue for producing fresh, crisp Sancerre. The Domaine is now owned and managed by Jean-Louis Saget.
The ancestors of Pierre Archambault have lived in the Sancerre area since the 15th century. In the beginning, the huge rock cave dug into the hillside beneath their vineyards was a quarry. Then it was used to grow mushrooms, and after that as a storage area for a sparkling wine producer. Monsieur Archambault's grandfather was the first of his family to specialize exclusively in growing grapes and making wine in the caves of Domaine de la Perriére.
It's unfortunate that this region is so under appreciated and overlooked - the wines from the Loire Valley are outstanding. They are delicious examples of varietal and soil expression and the wide range of wines is so refreshing. Dry, sweet, sparkling, red, white… all represented here in the Loire.
