The Alexander Valley Viticultural Area generally follows the Russian River through the heart of northern Sonoma County, abutting the Chalk Hill appellation south of Healdsburg. The growing area is relatively warm; the river offers a cooling influence. Merlot is not widely planted in the Alexander Valley and the variety is in great demand. The grapes secured for the STG are of exceptional character, from mature vines which were harvested by hand.
After crushing, the fermenting wine was pumped over the """"cap"""" of the skins twice a day to extract maximum color. Following primary fermentation, the wine was racked into 50-gallon American oak barrels and underwent 100% malolactic fermentation during the long months of aging. The finished wine has a deep garnet hue and openly fruity aromas; its round, supple flavors show attractive berry fruitiness and hints of oak, with a soft, lingering finish.
