This 'Clos of the King' is Merode's finest, top Corton – more than half of the blend is from 71 year-old vines that produce the most complete and compelling example of Corton. When tasting a mature example of Clos du Roi, it is no surprise why the King of France once chose this vineyard to be his own on the hill of Corton.
"Great purity here. Dense aromas and flavors of cherry, wild berry, chocolate, earth and spice ride a silky texture. It's vibrant and firm, with ripe, fine tannins. This builds in intensity to the long finish. Plenty in reserve. Best from 2008 through 2020. 70 cases made."
The splendid Château de Serrigny, home of Prince Florent de Merode, with its secluded gardens and surrounding moat, has an enchanted, medieval appearance. The Merode domaine is an unusually old continuous holding. Their Corton and Ladoix properties have been in the Merode family since the year 1700. The château’s cuverie dates back to the fifteenth century, but has been modernized within the past decade. We have been buying wines from Prince de Merode since he started estate-bottling with the 1959 vintage.
