Di Majo Norante Ramitello Rosso 2001
Red Wine
from Southern Italy, Italy
winemaker's notes:
A very cool Italian red - Ramitello is a blend of Sangiovese and Aglianico. This is serious stuff - rich, round and structured with great dark fruit, a wonderful value in Italian wine.
Intense ruby red in color with violet reflections. The scent of plums comes through on the nose. Full-bodied and velvety with balanced flavors of plum and woodberries. Hints of licorice in the persistent finish. Excellent with richly flavored dishes, particularly meats, game and aged cheeses.

This was a pretty good wine. Had it tonight with some prime rib. We opened it and immediately had a glass that was very dry and tannic. However, as the bottle aired out the flavors began more apparent and the wine was excellent. I would recommend giving it at least 30 minutes before drinking.

Have not tried the 2001 but the 1999 was exquisite and a bit better than the 2000. It may be that the extra year in the bottle lets this wine fully develop. This is a good example of how Italian wines have progressed under the IGT system--no roughness here. Adding Aglianico to Sangiovese creates more interest than either grape alone. A great replacement for Zinfandel and quite food-friendly with appetizers such as cocktail meatballs, stuffed mushrooms, calamato olives and so on. This wine is a fine example of the sophistication that can be enjoyed these days for under $15 a bottle.
