Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

It has a bright red cherry color with violet glints. On the nose, it displays complex and ripe blackberry aromas, combined with subtle spicy notes. Fleshy, tasty and meaty on its passage through the mouth, displaying balsamic notes. It reveals a rounded and long aftertaste.

It is a great match with stewed and grilled meat, as well as with dry and semi-dry cheeses. Perfect for all kinds of Iberian and non-Iberian cold meats.

The 2007 Inspiracion Valdemar is a blend of 90% Tempranillo and 10% Graciano that was aged in French and American oak for 10 months. Dark ruby in color, it reveals an attractive nose of smoke, leather, spice box, black cherry, and blackberry. In the mouth it has good volume and concentration, plenty of spicy fruit, good balance, and a medium-long finish.

Bodegas Valdemar Winery Image
The Martinez Bujanda family, producers of Valdemar wines, founded their original winery in 1889. They own 820 acres of vineyards, which makes Valdemar one of the largest estates in the Rioja. A new winery was built in 1984 to take advantage of modern technologies, integrating both new and time-honored traditions of winemaking.

Hailed as the star red variety in Spain’s most celebrated wine region, Tempranillo from Rioja, or simply labeled, “Rioja,” produces elegant wines with complex notes of red and black fruit, crushed rock, leather, toast and tobacco, whose best examples are fully capable of decades of improvement in the cellar.

Rioja wines are typically a blend of fruit from its three sub-regions: Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Oriental, although specific sub-region (zonas), village (municipios) and vineyard (viñedo singular) wines can now be labeled. Rioja Alta and Alavesa, at the highest elevations, are considered to be the source of the brightest, most elegant fruit, while grapes from the warmer and drier, Rioja Oriental, produce wines with deep color, great body and richness.
