Winemaker's Notes

Casillero del Diablo Merlot is big in volume and smooth, while exhibiting great structure. Dark and deep red color. Luscious fruit flavors: cherries, currants, berries and plums. On the palate, hints of mocha and herbs, generously framed by toasty American oak. It has a mouthfilling texture and is soft, but well structured.

This wine is an excellent complement to a variety of cheeses, meats and pasta dishes.

I had the "Historic" 2007 vintage last night with my wife. We grilled up some strip steaks. I found the Casillero del Diable to compliment them nicely. Light tanins and a peppery bite it. I would defineitly buy it again. I paid 10 dollars for it but it felt like a 15 dollar bottle. I find the Chilean reds to be an exceptional value.

Learn About Chile

(CHEE-lay) Long and thin, Chile has a lot of land north to south. The wine region here is a series of districts based near Santiago. The vineyards are protected by the Pacific on the west and the Andes mountains on the east. This could help explain why the climate changes more from east to west than north to south - also why the country has remained phylloxera free....

Learn About Merlot

Merlot(mehr-LOW) No second fiddle Merlot is coming back into its own. High popularity led to mass production, which then led to a backlash towards the variety (remember Miles in Sideways?). But passionate Merlot producers, and of course the right bank of Bordeaux, continued to produce quality versions of this grape. Merlot remains the principle grape of top chateaux in St...
