Concha y Toro Casillero Del Diablo Cabernet Sauvignon 2004
Cabernet Sauvignon
from Chile, South America
winemaker's notes:
This is an incredible value from Chile! One of the best Cabernets you'll ever enjoy for the price. Bright, dark red. Appealing ripe cherries, blackcurrant and dark plums with a touch of vanilla and toasty oak. Medium bodied with smooth and friendly tannins. Hints of plums and cherries and a generous touch of toasted American oak.
Enjoy with Red meat, lamb, pasta with red sauces, paella, rabbit and gruyère cheese.

I’ve loved wine for so long, but never taken the time to study it and most of the times haven’t retained memory of the names of wines that I’ve enjoyed. I have some friends and family with never ending pocket books so have enjoyed some unbelievably expensive wines too. About 2 years ago, I decided that I was going to have a glass of wine every night at dinner to try to understand the different notes, flavors, scents and finishes of wines – at least enough so that I would start to understand what my pallet enjoyed. For over a year, while I enjoyed a good variety of wines (discovered I only like red wines and get head aches from whites), I was still confused as to what the qualities were in the wine that I liked. I thought this was because I was only drinking 1 glass per night and thought I was going to have to start tasting wines against each other to really understand the differences in wines. And then . . . came Concha y Toro 2005 Casillero Del Diablo Cabernet Sauvignon. Wow! I was so happy when I tasted this wine that I ran straight to my computer to research it and when I read the reviews of it like “deep, fleshy, dense, and ripe with dense, herbal, spicy fruit; long and complex” and “if you like a very dry red, this is it” I was very excited to find that I loved the taste of a dry, fleshy, chocolaty, deep red with a long finish. I love the taste, smell and finish of this wine. It is the first wine I’ve ever had that makes me want to drink a whole bottle on my own and still want more! This wine is so affordable – I’m telling everyone I know and you too, go out and get some today and enjoy, you won’t believe it!

I was skepitical when my local wine merchant suggested this inexpensive offering ($8.99). I'd been wanting expand my exposure to South American wines and this little number from Chile was a big surprise. Great cherry nose with hints of currant and plum, not to mention a surprisingly creamy finish. It's slightly Oaky for me but not burned. I highly reccomend this as an everyday Cab, and especially at the price.
