Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

This is the estate's top cuvée, a 100% Sangiovese single-vineyard wine from an ancient "round field" (campo cerchi) that enjoys a perfect southern exposure, at the junction of three steep valleys in Castellina. Aged 18 months in new barrique; just 3,000 bottles produced. A flood of black/red fruits on the nose; expansive, concentrated yet lively on the palate. A juicy, vibrant cherry finish lingers decadently; the marriage of wood and wine here is seamless. A very impressive effort.

Critical Acclaim

"The 2004 Chianti Classico Campo Cerchi is Sangiovese made from the estate’s best vineyards and aged for 18 months in French oak. This is an elegant, refined beauty that flows with layers of dark cherries, leather, licorice, earthiness, tobacco and French oak. Medium in body, the wine reveals gorgeous length and a long, polished finish. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2019."

For a stint in the 70s and 80s, wines labeled Chianti contained cheap red wine packaged in a straw casked bottle, most popular for the candle holder it would become. But no more. Sangiovese re...
