Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

Viognier comes to us from the Condrieu and Chateau-Grillet appellations of the northern Rhone. It was presumed to have arrived from Dalmatia and transported to the Rhone by Emperor Probus in AD 281. Currently there are approximately 2,000 acres planted of this varietal in California. Cline's Viognier offers rich and distinctive aromas of pears, apricots, orange blossoms and honeysuckle.

I discovered this delicious wine by accident, while I was at dinner in San Francisco. I love Viognier, but really haven't had it since I left Virginia, so I had to order a class. It smells as good as it tastes! It is on the sweeter side, but it's a balanced sweetness. It paired very nicely with my seafood dish. I will order this wine again and again. If you try it and like it, look for the Viognier that Virginia's Chrysalis produces.

Learn About Viognier

Viognier(vee-ohn-YAY) Viognier is best known for producing the rich, aromatic white wines of the Northern Rhone. Once a pricey commodity of the area, it's now much easier to find and drink. The perfumed grape creates wines of distinct aromas and flavors. Lower in acid and even lower yielding, Viognier kept to itself in Southern France until some traveling winemakers took hold of...
