winemaker's notes:
The 2009 Cinq Cepages is a complex and layered wine. Its deep garnet color meets vibrant aromas of blackberry, black plum, clove spice and rich mocha notes in the glass. Secondary aromas of raspberry and cherry mingle with notes of violet and pomegranate. The aromas lead to a juicy palate with flavors of blueberry and blackberry. Nuanced notes of roasted coffee, black tea and a distinct dark chocolate component add to the complexity. The full-bodied wine
has smooth, silky tannins that offer solid structure but do not overwhelm. This 20th Anniversary vintage wine is well-balanced and delicious tasting now but powerful enough to reward with cellaring.
Blend: 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc, 2% Malbec, 1% Petit Verdot

critical acclaim:
"Another superb Cinq Cépages. A blend of all five classic Bordeaux grape varieties, but based on Cabernet Sauvignon, it is both immediately pleasurable and intensely complex. Waves of black currants, dark chocolate, green olives, licorice and toasty oak roll across the palate, wrapped into firm, dusty tannins. Very good now but should develop further over the next 8–10 years. Easy to find, with 5,500 cases produced.Cellar Selection "

Wine Enthusiast
"The estate’s flagship 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Cinq Cepages is a wine mostly of promise at this stage. Mocha, espresso and savory herbs add nuance and complexity as this dark wine gradually unfurls in the glass. I see terrific depth and richness here, but readers will have to be patient. There is a lot going on here. A second bottle tasted in a complete vertical of Cinq Cepages came across as blend of 2007 and 2008, with a slight nod to the older vintage. The 2009 was impressive in that setting as well. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024.
This range from Chateau St. Jean is packed with values. Many of these wines, especially at the entry-level, are made in large enough production to be relatively easy to find. Achieving high quality at this scale is a rare skill. Longtime winemaker Margo Van Staaveren certainly seems to have the magic touch."

The Wine Advocate
"Good full medium red. Inviting aromas of redcurrant, licorice, herbs, graphite and tobacco leaf, lifted by a peppery nuance. Suave, lively and fine-grained, with attractive inner-mouth perfume to the flavors of redcurrant, licorice, herbs and minerals. Juicy, firmly tannic wine with moderate ripeness but no shortage of energy or personality. Made in a rather subdued, traditional style, this blend should age gracefully."
