Winemaker's Notes

Château Pape Clement is one of the brightest stars in the extensive range of vineyards Bernard Magrez owns worldwide. Based in Bordeaux, this great owner has made quality his personal battle. Hence, the care lavished on this land, the exceptional qualities of which have made Pessac's reputation for over seven centuries.

Planted in 1300, the estate is the oldest planted vineyard in the region, when it was presented to Bertrand de Goth upon his appointment as archbishop of Bordeaux, by his brother, Berald. It received its name from Bertrand's papal name, Clement V; on his election in 1306 he gave the estate to his successor as archbishop, Cardinal Arnaud de Canteloup. Bertrand, who would later move the papacy to Avignon near Châteauneuf-du-Pape, planted this original vineyard with red wine grapes.

Critical Acclaim

"Intense aromas of crushed berry, mineral, tobacco and smoke. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and loads of ripe, rich fruit. Goes on for minutes. This is tight and well-structured. Best after 2011."
93 Points

"Deep garnet. Some cedar is still apparent on the very youthful nose, slightly masking the otherwise attractive cranberry, plums and cassis fruit aromas with a whiff of cloves. The palate is well balanced with medium to high acidity and medium to firm, ripe, velvety tannins. Long finish. Drink now to 2025."
93 Points

"Good deep red. Expressive aromas of currant, plum, tobacco, truffle and smoked meat. Flamboyantly ripe and sexy, with surprising vinosity giving shape to the fleshy flavors of raspberry, smoked meat, tobacco, truffle and minerals. Utterly captivating on the long, mellow finish, throwing off notes of sandalwood, woodsmoke, cocoa and tobacco."
