Winemaker's Notes

The color is purple and the wine has a sustained, very intensive nose of red fruits. In the mouth it has a firm, noble structurewith voluptuous fruit which combines a an exceptional roundness and finesse. For today, the tasting is lovely, indicating a perfect balance.

Critical Acclaim

"Licorice, blackberry and fresh cèpe on the nose. Full and velvety-textured, with lots of fruit and a long, caressing finish. Pretty and rich. The best Gloria in years. Best after 2014. 18,000 cases made. "
92 Points

"A big-time sleeper of the vintage, this St.-Julien reveals notes of tapenade, spice box, cedar, sweet black cherries, and black currants. An opulent texture, terrific fruit, medium to full body, and abundant concentration suggest this stunning Gloria will provide plenty of pleasure over the next 15 years."

I have purchased this particular wine for a few years to give to my parents on their wedding anniversary each year. Every time it brings my stepmom to tears. This was a wine she was first given when she graduated from college and has been her favorite for years, but she has always had troubles finding it. That is until I happened to find it by accident 3 years ago on wine.com . I gave her a bottle for Christmas that year and you would have thought she had been struck through the heart! She wouldn't even look at other presents, she just sat there cradling the wine while the tears flowed. Ever since I have done all I can to make sure to have some of this wine on hand just for those special occasions.

One of the better-known Crus Bourgeois of the Medoc, still at reasonable prices. Chateau Gloria is made up of holdings of classified Crus and would deserve to be classified in its own right. Recent vintages have found all their character again, in the tradition of the great Saint-Julien wines. A surprising wine if you are prepared to wait: after 30 years, the 1970 vintage has just reached optimum maturity.

But it has 11 excellent second, third and fourth growths, and the highest proportion of classified growths of the top four. It doesn't have the concentration and powerful punch of a...
