Krug Clos du Mesnil is the product, not merely of a single grape variety and a single year, but of a single historic vineyard. Made with 100% Chardonnay grapes from the Clos du Mesnil, a single walled vineyard covering just 1.85 hectares (or 4.57 acres) within the village of Mesnil-sur-Oger in the renowned Côte des Blancs.
Krug Clos du Mesnil 1998 is a vivid, incisive champagne that follows an initial impression of extreme purity with supple, rich and complex harmonies.
Extreme purity evolving into richness and complexity: candied fruit, praline, white truffle and a luminous pale gold color.
"A wine that has created its own universe. It has a unique, special softness that allies with the total purity that comes from a small, enclosed single vineyard. The fruit is almost irrelevent here, because it comes as part of a much deeper complexity. This is a great wne, at the summit of Champagne, a sublime unforgettable experience. "
"An exercise in finesse, with beautiful harmony to the depth of flavor, rich texture and well-honed acidity. Offers lots of minerality, with subtle savory notes of fleur de sel and oyster shell accenting fresh quince, dried apricot, honey, candied ginger and cumin flavors. Lovely. Drink now through 2025."
"The 1998 Brut Blanc de Blancs Clos du Mesnil has come together beautifully since I tasted it last year. This is a remarkably taut, focused bottle of the 1998 with great energy and minerality in its precise, crystalline fruit. I don't expect the 1998 to be one of the longest-lived Mesnils, but if this bottle is any indication, it should continue to drink well for a number of years. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2028."
The Wine Advocate
In short - EXCELLENT!! I never quite understood why people drink champagne to celebrate special occasions until I have the Clos de Mesnil myself. Everything - from the packaging, the royal golden color, to the honey & almond taste and smooth finish - was simply impeccable. It was no doubt an expensive tasting experience, but also one that I didn't regret having (whether or not it is worth it it's completely subjective).
