Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

#69 Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2009

The 2007 Catena Malbec shows a dark violet color with deep bluish – black tones. The nose offers ripe, concentrated dark fruit aromas with delicate floral notes and traces of vanilla and mocha. The mouthfeel is rich and lush, with concentrated black cherry and red currant fruit flavors layered with sweet spices, tobacco and a touch of leather. The finish presents soft, supple tannins with bright, crisp acidity and a flinty minerality which gives the wine exceptional length.

Critical Acclaim

"A sleek, polished style, with alluring mocha and raspberry ganache notes, backed by dark plum, hoisin sauce and graphite flavors. This has serious weight, but stays focused and driven. Drink now through 2011."
91 Points

"The purple-colored 2007 Catena Malbec spent 12 months in 35% new French and American oak. The nose reveals balsam wood, vanilla, mocha, cassis, and black cherry. Plush on the palate, this medium-bodied Malbec has layered, spicy flavors, with a touch of tobacco and leather making an appearance. Balanced and lengthy, it will evolve for 2-3 years and offer prime drinking from 2011 to 2019. "

I bought this bottle on the advice of a friend in the trade. I purchased it as a reward for completing a final exam and didn't take the time to decant it properly. So the first glass was slightly tart with a strong bite, which took me some time to drink. Meanwhile the rest of the bottle, given time to breath, developed the most delicious and well rounded taste. With every subsequent glass I fell more in love with this bottle, each taste reminded me of falling into a different candy lake in a Willy Wonka movie with flavors of berries, chocolate, and floral notes (complete with jazz hands and Oompa Loompas). I will be gifting this bottle to many of my friends this holiday, it’s definitely worth spreading the word! P.S. Purple Teeth!! But it was well worth it!!

Have had literally 50 different Malbecs all in the typical $10-$20 or so range...this is the best one yet! Just delicious...and for $20 or so...a real steal. Enjoy!

I have had this wine several times and, it always seems to deliver. Catena has a spicy start, medium tannin with a smooth middle, and long finish. This wine has taste notes that will soften, and would be great over the next 5-10 years.

For the price, this is a steal - very good, straightforward Malbec.

Stronger tannins than its 2006 vintage, which seems to call for a few more years aging. Taste improves after substantial aerating. Spices and fig paste infused taste. Quite pleasant a medium bodied wine. Pleasant and Balanced Taste, but it kinda lacks characteristics. Maybe aging will help. 89-90.

A tart, piquant, and Sahara-dry red with a peppery finish, it's a Malbec with fruity and floral aromas and medium body and bold, sweet flavors (though not as strong as Zinfandel). It's great with pork chops and some hard cheeses, and will only improve with age, mellowing out some.

This is the 4th bottle of this particular vintage I've had. Each of the four has been slightly different, but each was quite good. This Malbec seems to be sweeter than most. Definitely easy to drink and seems to be a crowd pleaser of wine afficionados and guzzlers alike.

(ahr-jen-TEE-nah) Now fifth in the world for wine production, Argentina is catching up in the quality wine sector. A long time wine producer, Argentina used to make wine in order to drink it, not export it. And so the wines produced were quaffable and rustic and made for the local's everyday dinner. Yet it's hard not to get caught up in the wine market of the world and some...
