The 2005 Catena Malbec has a deep, dark violet color, with pronounced blackish-purple tones. The aromatic structure is full of ripe dark fruits, floral notes of violets and lavender, and touches of vanilla and spice. The palate begins with sweet black cherry fruits and has a generous texture. There are marked mineral notes as well as layers of chocolate and spicy black pepper. The finish is soft and sweet with ripe tannins and vibrant acidity.
"Catena's 2005 Malbec was sourced from four vineyards, was aged for 12 months in 70% French oak, 20% new, and 30% new American oak, and bottled unfined and unfiltered. Deep crimson-colored, it has an attractive perfume of cedar, pencil lead, mineral, and black cherry. Medium-bodied, it has a silky texture, serious depth and length for a wine of this price, well-concealed tannin, and a pure finish. Although it can be enjoyed now, this stylish Malbec will continue to improve with several more years in the bottle. It is a great value. When all is said and done, Catena Zapata is the Argentina winery of reference – the standard of excellence for comparing all others. The brilliant, forward-thinking Nicolas Catena remains in charge, with his daughter, Laura, playing an increasingly large role. The Catena Zapata winery is an essential destination for fans of both architecture and wine in Mendoza. Medium bodied, well-balanced, not too dry, not too sweet, lovely color. Overall, well constructed, but lacking the fruity taste and aroma I expect from a Malbec.
I found this Malbec to be somewhat disappointing. I enjoy my Argentinian wines, but somehow this one didn't really strike a chord with me.
My second Malbec. I don't think Malbec is for me. This was much better than the other Malbec I tried. I will say after it was exposed to the air for awhile it got better - more complex and a wider range of flavors.
Unfortunately, this isn't my cup of tea. It's a bit too tanniny for me.
This was a decent malbec, but not quite the level of other Argentinean wines I've had. I'm a fan of malbecs, and this was passable. Good, not great.
Great choice, full body, deep rich flavor. At $20, I expected the wine would need to be decanted, but it was exceptional right out of the bottle. I was so surprised I asked my wife to taste -- she has better nose / taste than I -- and she agreed. Very good bottle, and incredible value for the money.
I had this wine many times. It was the first Malbec that I really enjoyed.
I am a malbec fan. I was super excited to try this one. I found it to be very sharp and young tasting. I had a bottle of Ben Marco 2005 Malbec the night before that was around the same $ and far superior!
