Cardinale Red Meritage 1999
Bordeaux Red Blends
from Napa Valley, California
winemaker's notes:
Cardinale established itself to be in the midst of a handful of the most consistently exceptional red wines in the world. It is an intricate composition of superlative vineyard sites with stand-alone excellence. Definitely Cabernet Sauvignon, predominately from the Napa Valley, wine comes from three mountain estate vineyards on Mount Veeder, Howell Mountain and Alexander Mountain. Cardinale provides a powerful sensory experience rich in complex aromas, layered flavors and seamless texture. In the words of Robert Parker Jr.'s, The Wine Advocate, Cardinale "is one of the profound wines being produced in northern California." Less than 3000 cases produced.

So why may you ask am I writing a review when I couldn't even begin to analyze this wonderful product as articulately as those tasters at Wine Spectator. I suppose if I am a complete amateur than my thoughts might just perk your interest in the wonderful winery. Well I had never heard of Cardinale until I actually found the winery next to Opus which of course I had heard of. The 1999 is a wonderful wine. I tasted it last month and it is still young in the sense that 2 more years will mellow the overall flavors nicely. I bought the 1998 vintage which is ready to be enjoyed today. I feel due to the harsher growing season it has actually produced a better wine as of today. I do think if you are a fan of Opus or Cardinale you will love this wine. Defiantly invest in half a case of the 1999, and half of the 1998. Over the next two to three years you can enjoy the 98, and then move to the 99. Cardinale has a wonderful web site describing each growing season in detail so the next time you taste a vintage you can decide for yourself. Enjoy...
