Winemaker's Notes

Calendal is a blend of 50% Mourvedre and 50% Grenache from the organic farms of Domaine des Escaravailles in Roaix. This wine can be enjoyed now or cellared for many years, drink now or store until 2020+.

Critical Acclaim

"The personal project of the visionary and genius oenologist Philippe Cambie and his partner Gilles Ferran, this equal part blend of Mourvedre and Grenache has produced an allocation of 400 cases for the United States market. Move fast! This is a great effort, and the best Calendal produced to date. Dense bluish purple in color, with notes of graphite, blueberry, black raspberry, roasted mushrooms and meats, the wine has great intensity, full-bodied opulence, beautiful purity, texture and a multi-dimensional mouthfeel. Again, this is a superb effort, with the Mourvedre providing structure, delineation and aging potential, and the Grenache providing generosity, opulence, and hedonism. Drink it over the next 7-8 years. "

Lots of fruit up front but unfortunately, we found the finish acidic, somewhat bitter, and even slightly metallic. Tried decanting a couple hours and even tasting a day later but didn't seem to help the bitterness or aftertaste.

Learn About Calendal

Calendal is a story of friendship between two men: Philippe Cambie and Gilles Ferran. They studied oenology together more than 20 years ago at the wine university in Montpellier. They shared their love of the terroir of Provence, their love of Grenache and Mourvedre, and mostly their passion for very old vines. They bought in 2006 a tiny vineyard located on the Plan de Dieu...

Learn About Rhone Red Blends

The Rhone region of France has a delightful selection of red varieties. There are 22 grapes allowed in the Rhone AOC, about half of them red. Most of these varieties are used as secondary blending partners, often comprising less than 10% of the blend. The primary red players of Rhone blends are Syrah, Grenache and Mourvedre. Most wines from the Southern Rhone use Grenache as their...
