Winemaker's Notes

Our 2008 Santa Maria Valley Pinot Noir displays aromas of dark cherry and plum, accented by hints of rose petals, brown spice and smoke. The flavor profile has a core of black cherry and dark plum with hints of earth and cardamom backed by a smooth, silky and toasted finish.

Critical Acclaim

"The generic and least expensive Pinot Noir, the 2008 Santa Maria, is a user-friendly, yet seriously endowed Pinot Noir with loads of fruitcake, roasted herbs, black cherry, and plum notes. The wine has a dark plum color, deep, lush flavors, and succulence and fleshiness that are totally seductive. Drink it over the next 2-3 years. "

This is not an overly fruity pinot noir. Even so, it's truly enjoyable pinot with earthiness yet has dark cherry fruit that is nicely integrated. A tasty pinot that's probably an 89 rather than a 90. I'd given it a 90 if the fruit was just a touch more pronounced. All in all - a high quality wine.

Very unusual pinot noir -- long on earthy, short on fruitiness. Stay with pinot noirs from various Julia vineyard producers
