Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

The 2006 Brokenwood Pinot Noir has a deep center with youthful purple tints around the edges. This wine exhibits a complex nose of lifted cherry, dark chocolate and spice over sweet, earthy notes. Layers of smoky vanillin oak appear in the background. The palate is robust in flavor with rich, black currant and brandied pudding flavors balanced by ripe tannins and a persistent, dry finish. This perfectly balanced Pinot Noir will mature further with time in the bottle, although it is enjoyable as a young Pinot Noir.

Critical Acclaim

"Light and silky, with a lovely burst of cherry and raspberry fruit up front, lingering on the polished finish with hints of cream and flowers."
89 Points

"Medium red. Smoky cherry and dark berry aromas, with deeper licorice and sassafras qualities adding complexity. Silky black raspberry and cherry compote flavors are broad and sweet, with musky herbs gaining strength with air. Finishes with a hint of sweet maple and gentle lift."
88 Points
