Winemaker's Notes

The long, cool, "El Nino" growing season in 1998 allowed the normally hot, Paso Robles appellation to enjoy more "coastal" temperature patterns with cooler days and colder nights. The harvest in this East Side vineyard got underway in early October, nearly a month later than the regional average. Full fruit maturity allowed a very natural approach to be taken in the cellar. Nearly all the wine was produced in closed top tanks with a floating cap to gently extract the deep Syrah color and the classic purple plum, cassis and wild blackberry flavors. Aging in two year air dried, American oak barrels, two-thirds of which were new, has added a lovely, toast and vanilla note.

Learn About Bridlewood Map ItMap It

Bridlewood joins a long and rich tradition of winemaking in Santa Barbara County. It wasn't until the 1960's and 1970's, when new breed of pioneering winemakers, including Dan Gehrs, started making wine in the broad area called the Central Coast, that a southern California winemaking renaissance occurred. Although the winery's capacity is 50,000 cases, releases for the first few years will be 10-15,000 cases. Growth will be consistent with the winery's philosophy of producing many small lots of high quality wines.

The home base of Syrah is the Northern Rhone, where it creates the exclusive wines of Hermitage and Cote Rotie. On the less pricy side, the Rhone makes Syrah-based wines in Crozes...
