Bonny Doon Ca' del Solo Big House Red 2002
Red Wine
from Central Coast, California
winemaker's notes:
Another break-out hit for the recidivist partisans of this eclectic pan-Mediterranean blend. We altered our varietal mix just a tad this year and introduced a substantial amount of cabernet franc into the concoction. Big House Red is all about fragrance, spice and soft tannins. It has a fragrance of mint and garrigue, with insinuations of blackberry and the ubiquitous framboise. Not a wine that you would want to serve to the Queen (in virtue of its unregenerate rusticity), it is nevertheless a wine that is the perfect complement to barbecue, pasta, pizza and all of the major non-vegan groups.
"Named after a maximum security prison, this is an inky-dark wine, rich and dense, from Bonny Doon's Randall Grahm. It stains the side of the glass with thick, oozing streaks. The dark stone-fruity aromas are accented with lavender, then give way to flavors of plum, black olive and nectarine. Hefty tannins grip the tongue and coat the palate. Despite the volume, there's considerable finesse and balance. Don't be put off by the screw top."

Rich, spicy, robust. A very balanced red. I am always in search for wines to introduce to my friends that are a bit unconventional and/or obscure. My friends were quite pleased with this choice.

My godfather Floyd introduced me to this wine. It's the best for the price. Great for sipping or for having with a meaty meal. The screw cap so convenient! A classy-yet-sporty wine!

I admit, it was odd to twist the top off of a bottle of wine, but don't let the screwcap scare you--this is a great wine for the price. A grippy red that balances most foods nicely, Bonny Doon feels at home with a pizza as much as a filet. A friendly wine to come home to.
