Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

Beautiful garnet/crimson color. Aromas of cacao, spices and toast. The palate is very even and dense showing lush fruit framed by mineral undertones.

Critical Acclaim

"The 2008 Ostatu, a wine composed of 95% Tempranillo with the balance Garnacha, Graciano, and Mazuelo. It sports an aromatic array on mineral, potpourri, and a confiture of black fruits. Dense, savory, and ripe on the palate, it has the structure to evolve for 2-3 years and will provide considerable pleasure between 2014 and 2023. "

Learn About Bodegas Ostatu

Ostatu is a family-run winery that makes high quality wines from its own vineyards. These vineyards are our greatest asset, and they and our wines have been the way of life for various generations of the Sáenz de Samaniego family.

The winery is in the village of Samaniego, in the heart of the Rioja Alavesa region, at the foot of the Sierra de Cantabria Mountains, surrounded by dolmens, ancient churches, and old wine-making pits etched into the ground – traces of an age-old culture of vine growing in this area.
