winemaker's notes:

In 1998, Alejandro and his wife Esperanza acquired the historic "La Granja" estate: 1800 acres of southfacing hillsides along the Guareña River with enormous hand-carved 18th century cellars. New vineyards totaling 300 acres of Tempranillo clones obtained in Pesquera have reverted this historic wine estate to its original vocation. 2003 is the first vintage made entirely from estate vines, 100% Tempranillo from the Pesquera clones. Purity of fruit accompanies generous texture and weight, with excellent balance and expression enhanced by two years in bottle prior to release.

critical acclaim:

"Deep ruby color. Sexy dark berry and plum aromas are complemented by pipe tobacco and candied licorice. Plush, sexy dark berry liqueur flavors are supported by velvety tannins and seem to gain flesh with aeration. Very easy to drink, with no rough edges and a strong finishing note of blackberry. Very fresh for a wine from such a hot vintage."

International Wine Cellar

"The 2003 Dehesa la Granja offers an attractive bouquet of smoke, mocha, coffee, and blackberry. This is followed by a structured, ripe, and concentrated wine with several years of aging potential. It reveals some of the compression of the hot vintage conditions but should provide pleasure between 2011 and 2023."

the bottle I received was the definition of "cooked". Wine.com sent me out another gratis, so three cheers to their fantastic customer service.

rating (10/20/2010):
I would buy this wine again but only for somebody who enjoys a bigger flavor and doesn't mind sediment at the bottom. If you de-cant it, which they recommend, use a strainer. I tasted a good amount of tobacco.
