Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

The Tinta de Toro varietal is a clone of the Tempranillo varietal, but it has a thicker skin, lower acidity, and deeper blue-black color. Tinta de Toro produces bolder colored red wines compared to Tempranillo, with powerful tannins.

Critical Acclaim

"The 2009 Monte Hiniesta is a purple/black wine from a great vintage in Toro. It was aged for 9-10 months in first and second year American oak. Brooding black fruits, cigar box, Asian spices, and an earthy minerality inform the nose of this smooth, layered bruiser. A bit more complexity will come with another year or two in the bottle."

Glad I bought several bottles as this wine really delivers for the price! Dark ruby color; fresh, violets, and dark fruit on the nose; medium full; fine tannins lead to lingering finish.

Learn About Bodegas Allegro con Spirito

Owner Juan Antonio Fernandez acquired vineyards from 1996 to 2000, which range in age from 30 to 100 years old, and started his bodega in 2000. His wife is in charge of the bodega (with lots of input from Juan Antonio), and Juan Antonio is in charge of the vineyards. All of the harvesting is done by hand in the early morning, and the grapes are brought to the bodega by mid morning. All movement of wine in the bodega is done by gravity with no mechanical pumping. The aging process in barrels is done in underground cellars below the bodega.

The most popular red varieties of Spain include Tempranillo and Garnacha (Grenache). Whites don't garner quite as much recognition, but there are some regional varieties not to be missed, like Albarino...
