Alberto, a field blend of 95% Malbec and 5% Merlot (planted in 1955), was fermented with native yeasts (as are all Noemia's wines) and aged for 9 months in 30% new French oak before bottling without fining or filtration. Purple-colored, it displays a superb bouquet of sandalwood, spice box, black cherry, and blackberry. This leads to a medium- to full-bodied, silky-textured wine with incipient complexity, succulent flavors, impeccable balance, and a 45-second finish. Give it another 2-3 years to fully blossom and drink it from 2011 to 2020. "

Bodega Noemia de Patagonia Winery
Residing on the 39th latitude, Bodega Noemia is one of the southern-most wineries in the world. A region of glacial origins with poor soil and limestone-rich bedrock, it benefits from the mineral-rich waters of the Limay and Neuquen rivers. First plated in 1932, the original pre-phylloxera rootstock of the vineyards was carefully resuscitated starting in 2001, and winemaker Hans Vinding-Diers oversaw the estate'd Massale selections in order to create tailored vineyard compositions. To amplify the terroir's signature in the final wines, fermentation is carried out using only indigenous yeasts. Committed to protecting this unique patrimony, almost all Bodega Noemia wines are produced in accordance with Argencert organic and Demeter biodynamic standards. Notable FactsUnlike its Chilean neighbor, Argentina's vineyards are spread out around the country. The best known region is Mendoza, almost parallel to Santiago to the west. Mendoza contains the sub-regions of Maipu (pronounced MY-pu) and San Rafael. Grape-wise, the most important white is Chardonnay, making wine similar to California's style on the variety. Another fun white grape to try is Torrontes. Almost only grown in Argentina, Torrontes makes wines that are crisp, aromatic and easy-drinking. Some of the best versions of this wine come from the northern region of Salta, with very high altitude vineyards. As for the reds, Cabernet Sauvignon is the main grape for many wines leaving the country, but Malbec, the grape Argentinians like to call their own, makes very distinctive wines that are structured, dense and velvety. Many more varieties happily grow in the country, but for export, and consistent quality, these are the primary grapes.
