Bivio DOCG Chianti 2006
Can an under $10 sangiovese make sense? Yes and no. The label on this wine denotes the namesake means a fork in the road in Italian. And thus I'll judge Bivio in two applications: as an aperitif, and as an accompaniment to food. Bivio falls short in the first application. While the nose is pleasant red fruit with a hint of flowers, the taste is a bit astringent and edgy. Like many Italian red wines, Bivio chianti is mellowed out by red sauce. If you're looking for something cheap to serve folks with pizza, lasagna, or sausage and "gravy," this could be the ticket. Since I tend to drink more wine by itself, I'll save my pennies for something with a little better pedigree.
