Winemaker's Notes

ORIGIN: Sourced entirely from the renowned Chianti region, the vineyards are located on well-exposed terrain at altitudes of 1,000 feet or more. Galestro clay soils impart the wine's elegance and refinement, while the well-drained Albarese limestone soils impart rich and full-bodied characteristics.

DESCRIPTION: Richly textured with blackberry and raspberry flavors, notes of violet and toasted almond leading to a lush, satisfying finish.

Let it breathe for about an hour and it is as good as if not better than Chianti priced at $25.

Can an under $10 sangiovese make sense? Yes and no. The label on this wine denotes the namesake means a fork in the road in Italian. And thus I'll judge Bivio in two applications: as an aperitif, and as an accompaniment to food. Bivio falls short in the first application. While the nose is pleasant red fruit with a hint of flowers, the taste is a bit astringent and edgy. Like many Italian red wines, Bivio chianti is mellowed out by red sauce. If you're looking for something cheap to serve folks with pizza, lasagna, or sausage and "gravy," this could be the ticket. Since I tend to drink more wine by itself, I'll save my pennies for something with a little better pedigree.

For a stint in the 70s and 80s, wines labeled Chianti contained cheap red wine packaged in a straw casked bottle, most popular for the candle holder it would become. But no more. Sangiovese re...
