Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

This wine exudes its sense of place—the personality and quality of Cabernet Sauvignon grown on Napa Valley's Rutherford Bench. Our 2009 Beaulieu Vineyard Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon captures this area with briary blackberry, dark plum, black cherry, chocolate and tobacco leaf. The famous Rutherford Dust gives the wine cocoa-powder tannins and texture, while well-integrated oak adds toasty mocha notes to the generous aromas and expansive flavors.

Critical Acclaim

"It takes Rutherford dust to make great Cabernet,” said legendary winemaker André Tchelistcheff. Our 2009 Beaulieu Vineyard Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon gives proof to his statement with rich dark fruit character woven with enticing anise, cocoa, licorice, loam and dried-herb notes."
90 Points

"The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford is a mouthful. This big, brawny Cabernet Sauvignon is loaded with dark red fruit, smoke, tar and licorice. It shows gorgeous balance and fabulous length in an up-front style that is sure to find many admirers for many reasons, not the least of which is its soothing price tag. Despite its overt fruit, the 2009 seems to have more than enough structure to drink well for another 5-7 years, maybe more."

The area was settled by a few choice wine families in the 1960's who bet that the wines of the area would grow and flourish. They were right. The Napa wine industry really took off in the 1980's, when vineyard...

Learn About Cabernet Sauvignon

(cab-uhr-NAY sow-veeh-yawn) King of Red Many refer to Cabernet Sauvignon as the king of red grapes. Perhaps that title is due to its ability to grow worldwide in a number of climates, or to the fact that it produces wine with such character yet such diversity. Either way, this grape is responsible, as a whole or a partner, for some of the greatest wines in the world. In Bordeaux,...
