Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

The 2010 Sacateurs Chenin Blanc has a light golden hue. The aromas are flinty, with honey, orange blossom and white stone fruit notes. It has incredible texture and palate weight. Full-bodied with honey and floral flavors, this Chenin Blanc has a savory character, but with a dry and refreshing finish.

Critical Acclaim

"Fermented naturally in concrete tanks, the 2010 Secateurs Chenin Blanc has a fresh, vibrant bouquet with orange blossom, Clementine and pressed white flowers. The palate is clean on the entry with a very natural feel. It is underpinned by racy acidity and light flavours of lemon peel, melon and honeysuckle that dovetail towards a refined, refreshing finish. For its price, this comes highly recommended."
89 Points

"Medium straw-yellow. At once ripe and cool on the nose, offering scents of lemon curd, grapefruit pith, honeydew and lemon. Dense and sweet, with an almost creamy texture nicely leavened by ripe, harmonious acidity. Shows a peach nectar quality toward the back and the thickness of a high-end Sancerre. Dense, sweet and fresh but will it develop more complexity?"

At the turn of the century (1900, that is), a surplus of wine in South Africa created a hierarchy of cooperatives, the biggest and best known being KWV. This organization seemed to favor quantity over quality and had most...
