The 2009 Renegade opens with generous aromas of red fruits with accents of boysenberry, coffee and tobacco. Bold, brambly flavors of black cherry, plum and cassis anticipate notes of cocoa and vanilla bean. A Syrah-inspired meatiness envelops the palate, while juicy acidity and smooth tannins are seamlessly integrated into a long, balanced finish.
The robust flavors and dashing elegance of the 2009 Renegade will appeal to a wide variety of dishes. Suggested pairings include pan-seared lamb chops with rosemary, roast venison with juniper sauce, pasta with smoked turkey and mushrooms, and grilled filet mignon.
"This vineyard lies in the southern reaches of Paso Robles, where the Pacific influence and warmer inland temperatures meet to create varied microclimates to mature an unusual collection of grapes. The soils vary as well, from volcanic rock to a bed of fossilized oyster shells. This wine blends syrah grown in sedimentary soils with malbec and petit verdot grown in shale and sandstone. It shows the coastal cool in its refreshing, balanced ripeness, a lithe and healthy feel to the fruit. The syrah and petite come together with gamey meatiness, the tannins supple and stony at once. An elegant Paso Robles red with a clean, open line of flavor, this is ready for any meats off the grill."
