Winemaker Notes

The Cambrian Shiraz represents a wonderful expression of the Tatiarra Vineyards terroir and is a classic, big Heathcote Shiraz. The grapes for this wine are generally cropped at very low yields between 1.5-2 tonnes per acre, producing a wine of immense power and concentration. The wine is matured in predominately new French and American oak casks for approximately 12 months.

The 2005 Shiraz Cambrian reveals more chocolate and scorched earth characteristics than the 2004 as well as fuller body, more abundant fruit, and huge tannin, muscle, and extract. Only connoisseurs with great cellars as well as abundant patience should consider purchasing this monster. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2025+ Rating: 94+

A big but balanced Shiraz, Tatiarra’s Cambrian Shiraz takes its name from the ancient rocks that underlie the vineyards. Black cherries, licorice and mineral notes finish long, picking up nuances of black olives.

The Tatiarra Vineyard consists of 143 acres of Cambrian Earth, North facing on the Western face of Mount Camel entirely planted to one grape variety, Shiraz, which the Heathcote district has become renowned for the world over. Tatiarra is a specialist niche producer. The company’s obsession is not to be the biggest, but rather one of the best Shiraz producers in the world. The Heathcote district has a rare ability to produce Shiraz wines of relatively high alcohol that remain perfectly balanced and absent of any hot sensation on the back palate. The wines are powerful with a monumental structure and richness.

The original vineyard was established by Bill Hepburn in the early 1990's consisting of 10 acres of low cropping vines. It was a modest start, with borrowed equipment, friendly neighbors and supportive family. Bill spent those early years camped in a caravan, not far from a large gum tree under which he built a ‘thunderbox’ (thus the inspiration for Tatiarra’s flagship wine, the Caravan of Dreams). However, the long cold nights finally got to Bill and he decided it was time to pass the dream on.
